What is a Gastric Sleeve surgery?
A gastric sleeve surgery, which is also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a weight loss surgery procedure which involves removing a significant portion of the stomach to reduce its size. The remaining portion is then is then reshaped into a cylindrical ‘sleeve’ shape. The end goal of the procedure is to limit the amount of food that a person can consume, resulting in weight loss for the individual.
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is performed laparoscopically, which involved making small incisions in the abdomen rather than a large incision. This results in both less pain and quicker recovery time compared to traditional open surgery. During the surgery, the patient is placed under anaesthesia.
Who is best suited for Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery is typically recommended for individuals who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or, a BMI of 35-39.9 with obesity-related health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea.
Is Gastric Sleeve surgery safe?
Gastric sleeve surgery is often considered a safer and less complicated surgery compared to other weight loss procedures such as gastric bypass. As with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications associated with a gastric sleeve, including, bleeding, infection, and staple line leaks. The risk level for these procedures is 1% or less.
